Two female common redpolls were seen again this morning at Ft. Smallwood
Park, AACo., first around 7:40 by Dennehy, Graf, and Starr, and an hour or so
later by Hubick and Brighton (probably by more people by now). The birds were
first seen foraging with juncos along the east side of the road in front of the
old fort, where gum balls had piled up between the asphalt and the grass.
(Gum balls being the prickly brown fruit of the Sweet Gum, Liquidambar
styraciflua.) The second shift pulled into the parking lot and saw the birds fly up
into the trees between the lot and the fort.
