Today I saw a couple new species for the year list. A flock of Tree Swallows
(20-25) was here at Jug Bay all morning, hawking over the river. I also
enjoyed watching my first Lesser Yellowlegs. It was feeding in a mud flat with
3 Greater Yellowlegs and 8 Snipe. There were also a lot of GW Teal (and NO
other waterfowl), I counted 254 teal. It is strangely absent of all other
waterfowl, but there is a pair of Ospreys on a nest platform on the river. I
was surprised to see them together this soon, they have been together for
two days. She arrived one day after him. There are also two other single
Ospreys, both hanging out on separate nest platforms.
I read about the golfer (Tripp Isenhour) that killed the hawk in FL this week
and it really ticked me off. I hope the U.S. Fish and Widlife Service and FL
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission press for maximum charges, and
hope he spends some time in jail. I read the maximum fine is only $1500,
which is ridiculously a insignificant expense to a professional golfer. But jail
time would give him something to think about. The PGA (and/or the B-league
he is currently touring on) should make an example out of him and bar him
from competition for at least a year, starting after he is released from prison.
