Hello,

I just saw on the West Virginia listserv a post that
George Hall has just passed away. He was a long-time
editor of the former Appalachian Region for the
journal (North) American Birds, which included
Maryland and Virginia west of the Blue
Ridge/Interstate 81. He also authored the book "West
Virginia Birds", which was published in 1983.

I am forwarding Larry Schwab's email from the other
listserv.

Dr George Hall, retired professor from West Virginia
University, chemist, teacher, writer, naturalist, and
life-long ornithologist died in peace in a Morgantown
hospital on February 28.

His accomplishments and contributions to ornithology
are many. He was co-founder of the Allegheny Front
Banding Station, was an authority on bird migration in
the Appalachians, author of West Virginia Birds (and
many other publications), and editor of the Wilson
Bulletin for nearly a decade, was writer, officer and
editor for the Brooks Bird Club, editor for the
Appalachian Region for American Birds, and was a
prolific bird bander.

Not only was he a definitive authority on West
Virginia birds, but George Hall was also a friend and
teacher to many of us who subscribe to this
distribution list.

Dr George Hall served his state, his university, his
profession, and his
passion for ornithology with extraordinary enthusiasm
and enormous
intellectual energy.
