Subject: Eagles at Dan's Rock, Alleg Co.
I have long suspected that the Alleg Front is an important spring migration
pathway for golden eagles through western MD, but never had the chance to
test
that hunch - until yesterday. The forecast looked good (warm with S winds),
so
I made the long trek west. Day started slow but after the wind shifted to
the
S/SE around 11:30 the eagle parade began, with many birds passing at or near
eye level. Totals for the day were 35 GOEA, 7 BAEA, 22 RTHA, 8 RSHA, 2 NOHA,
1
AMKE. A great day on the mountain!
I'm pretty sure this is the record single-day GOEA count for Maryland. At
our
Tussey Mtn site in central PA (which broke its own record Monday with 62
GOEAs!) the peak GOEA flights occur during the first three weeks of March,
so
Dan's may continue to be productive any time winds are S or SE over the next
few weeks. If anyone goes up there let me know what you find...are there any
hawkwatchers in western MD?
