A similar thing happened a few years back in Daytona with a young
minor league pitcher who decided to use a male osprey (half of a pair
that were nesting in the ball park) as target practice. He killed
the bird. While this report was sanitized, his initial response
IIRC was "what's the big deal? It was just a bird". Then the public
outrage followed by a few death threats made him have a change of
heart. I believe it was originally reported that the player in FL
wound up having to at least to pay a fine (probably paid by the team)
and I think there was some community service.
In my little feathered brain it sure makes a case for punishment in kind.
