Hi Jim,
 I picked up my first tick here about a week and a half ago, just  walking 
around the yard with the dog, in the AM. Our grass is still in winter  growth 
stage so like you I was surprised at the tick. I came in and put Halt (or  
something similar) on the dog. Seems early!
