Due to a horrible forecast, we're canceling the Cape May pelagic
scheduled for this Sunday, March 16.
If we can get enough people, we will attempt to run another trip on
Sunday, April 13 out of Cape May aboard the same boat.
One of the reasons we want to get out more at this time of year is to
look for Great Skua. Large numbers of Gannets and gulls follow the
schools of Mackerel, Herring, and other baitfish northward at this
time of year. Our hope is to find a skua following this parade of
potential victims.
Being a month later, the expected bird species composition is a bit
different than what we'd expect in March. This is an underbirded time
in our pelagic waters, but in 2004 an April trip found Fulmar, Common
Murre, Razorbill, Red Phalarope, Sooty Shearwater, a probable Manx
Shearwater, and saw a fantastic Gannet show with over 1,200 birds.
Puffins are certainly still possible, and Pomarine Jaegers may be on
the move.
The trip details are the same.
