Never go out of your house without your binocs. I do it all the time and today was one of those mornings I wish I had obeyed this cardinal rule of birding (it's a cardinal rule because you might see a cardinal).

As I was getting the Sunday paper this AM, I heard a strange song just up the road in some brush on the side of a hill. Foolishly I investigated sans binocs. I saw a bird pop up, partially backlit, into a tree. About all I could make out was a spot on it's chest. I scurried back into the house and popped in my trusty Thayer CD and played the song of a Tree Sparrow. Not thoroughly convinced that is what I heard, I grabbed the binocs and went back to where I had encountered the bird. Nothing but Grackles, Robins and a House Finch. If it was a Tree Sparrow, it would be a first for this neighborhood. Haven't had one here before.

Let this be a lesson to all of you young birders out there- NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT BINOCS!

Enjoyed the Woodcock walk with Ringler & Co last evening. There are plenty of them out there.

As for the favorite birding location thread - I would pick Texas.

That's part of Maryland isn't it? I know I'm geographically-challenged, but certainly it's in southern Garrett County somewhere. Right? Isn't that the Rio Grande running along the southern end of the county?
