On Saturday I hiked the Appalachian Trail from Penmar State Park to Route 40, about 18 miles. The major highlight was a fly-over Red Crossbill, calling repeatedly for about 20 seconds. I was a couple miles south of High Rock at the time. The bird headed due north flying above the peak of the ridge. I was in Frederick County at the time, the bird was in the "grey zone", I am not sure which if not both counties it was in. Other highlights included my first butterflies, 6 Mourning Cloaks, 1 Northern Spring Salamander, a Grey Fox, and 11 Ravens. Lowlight was finding a Barred Owl dead at a spring near a road, it neck was broken, it appeared to have been hit the night before. Cheers,
