All,
It's spring for sure. I had a house finch (male) a couple of days ago acting ill - sitting in the feeders, not flying away when approached, fluffed up, that really 'cute' look - I peered at him pretty closely with the bins and other than his behaviour and a little something in 'the corner of his mouth' like bit of peanut or something he did not look ill - so I've been watching. I haven't seen him since however this afternoon I noticed a Goldfinch (male) acting oddly - fluttering around, trying to land on peculiar things (like my head) the side of the bbq etc., not flying away when approached, flying unsteadily and low, clearly confused and a bit stressed, got the bins and sure enough, his eyes looked all funky - no obvious crusting yet, just that black-hole eyes-poked-out look that seems to happen in the beginning (or the end?), he was obviously sight-impaired. Could be something else but from past experience I'd say its the fincheye. Poor little guy obviously has some
kind of 'cootie' and is probably a goner. I have a couple-a-few every spring, usually only finches though.
