I took a trip out to Piney Run Park myself, and completely missed seeing Mr.
Ringler (and the Long-tailed Duck). This was the first time I've set foot in
Carroll County specifically to bird- I think I had six species in 2008, seen
on I-70 as I drove through to Frederick.
I saw six Common Loons in their summer tuxedos across from the boat launch
area. While standing at the gazebo trying to scan the scaup for IDs, I heard
a very incessant BARRED OWL. Then 17 white-tailed deer swam across the lake,
jumped out of the water, and bolted through the woods.
A quick stop at the Oakland Rd. boat ramp on Liberty produced another Common
Loon, and a Red-breasted Merganser.
