Like Mike Bowen, I was out this morning at Hains Pt and along the Anacostia
River. I, too, had a large number of HORNED GREBES. Not to trump Mike, but
I saw c.150 grebes between the Washington Channel and the Potomac River.
There were several flocks numbering from 14 to 30 scattered up and down the
river. Most were in basic plumage, but several were well into their molt
including a few that had quite a bit of color. Try as I might, I couldn't
find an Eared Grebe in the flocks. It was mid-April in 2002 when I found
one in the area, so I guess there's still a chance that one will show up.

It was a decent day for diving ducks, all seen from Hains Pt unless noted,
including:

1 RUDDY DUCK (hiding out among the grebes)
4 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS
2 COMMON MERGANSERS (flying up the Anacostia)
3 HOODED MERGANSERS
8 RING-NECKED DUCKS (along the Anacostia)
8 LONG-TAILED DUCKS
Hundreds of LESSER SCAUP (I didn't try to count this week, but last Saturday
I estimated about 1,500)
2 GREATER SCAUP (could have been more, I didn't try hard)
2 BUFFLEHEAD
MALLARD (the only dabbler seen today)
Last Saturday there were 3 GREEN-WINGED TEAL on the river.

I also saw 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL today (sorry, Mike), and there were c.5 in the
same area last weekend. And as Mike said, lots of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS
all around.

The highlight of the day was seeing 14 TURKEYS, including one strutting tom,
at Poplar Pt (seen from the Metro right-of-way, looking into the old
Architect of the Capitol grounds. The birds were just inside the fence).

At the wetlands there along the right-of-way I flushed 5 WILSON'S SNIPE.

Landbird migrants were few and far between, with highlights being 3 EASTERN
PHOEBE, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 1 FIELD SPARROW, and c.6 NORTHERN FLICKERS.

Good birding,
