This morning at dawn I was at the north end of Piney Run Park with Jim
Stasz, and Maureen and Dave Harvey. Before dawn, boaters could be observed
in the lake in what used to to be the closed off west end. Their lanters
were visible in the boats and additional fisherman could be seen with
lanterns along the shore lines. All of the activity must have spooked the
Sandhill Cranes as they were nowhere to be seen. At least 4 Common Loons
were observed flying off of the lake during the first hour after sunrise.
Also moving around were Black Ducks, Double-crested Cormorants, and flocks
of Canada Geese. On the lake in the north end were a few Green-winged Teal.
Pre-dawn, at about 6:00 when I first arrived, I heard a Woodcock overhead
along White Rock Road by the lake.
