Tonight's Big Story:

THE BIRD WORLD THREE CENTURIES BEFORE AUDUBON.

Janet Millenson, Past President of MOS.

Bird books didn't begin with the work of John James Audubon. This
presentation will introduce you to some beautiful, fascinating, and
occasionally wildly inaccurate bird illustrations and descriptions
published from the 1500s to the 1800s. You'll learn about early
versions of ornithological classification and nomenclature (got any
Virginia Nightingales at your feeder?), find out whether Mockingbirds
taste better or worse than House Sparrows, and discover amazing
medicinal uses for Hummingbirds, Hoatzins, and the versatile chicken.
Enjoy entertaining accounts and remarkable artwork that show how the
science of natural history has evolved over the centuries. Janet
Millenson, Past President of MOS and a member of the Montgomery Bird
Club helps produce Maryland Birdlife and is co-compiler of the
Sugarloaf Christmas Bird Count. She has been birding since childhood
when she used a book of Audubon prints to identify the species in her
backyard, and has collected antiquarian bird books and art for 30
years. The earliest items in her collection date from the 1500s.

There may also be a surprise guest to discuss the news about the South
River IBA.

See you tonight!
