An article in The Audubon Naturalist Society newpaper from last year or the  
year before told of a woman who simply broke the necks of the House Sparrows 
in  her boxes. I know of another individual who takes more drastic extremes, 
but he  also regularly has the highest number of bluebirds every year for his 
sector of  the Christmas count.
