Hi again,
APR 12 (Sat) 7:00 am/9:00 am -- all day SMITH ISLAND.
BY RESERVATION ONLY. All-day trip to see the herons,
egrets and other birds on the island, plus gannets,
sea ducks and possible pelagic species up close during
the boat rides to and from the island. Bring lunch,
snacks, beverages and cash; the General Store on the
island will be open, offering sandwiches, drinks and
snacks (cash only). Rental bicycles and golfcart are
available on the island.
Car pool from Nursery Park & Ride 7 am or meet at the
Point Lookout boat launch at 9 am. The boat leaves at
9:30, arrives at the island about 11 am, and can pick
us up about 2:30 pm (negotiable) for the
hour-and-a-half ride back to Point Lookout. As a
precaution, motion sickness medicine is advised (take
it an hour before the boat ride). Last year, we had a
great day with 67 species and a spectacular crowd of
Gannets vocalizing and diving for fish, right next to
the boat.
To reach Nursery Road Park & Ride, I-695 Beltway exit
8, (not exit 8A which goes to the tunnel): from outer
loop (southbound), ramp leads to parking lot across
Hammonds Ferry Road. From inner loop (northbound),
follow ramp right onto Fairview, turn right on Nursery
Rd, right on Hammonds Ferry Rd, then left at next
light into Park & Ride lot.
THIS TRIP REQUIRES RESERVATIONS BY WED. APR. 9 AND
$35-$45 *CASH* FOR EACH PERSON.
(Price depends on attendance.) No credit cards or
checks. Limit 30, waiting list of 5. If we don't fill
the trip by midnight Wednesday, the trip will be
CANCELLED. Contact Pete Webb, or

Friday to learn if the trip is go or no-go. The cash
will be paid at the boat dock before boarding Saturday
morning. It is advisable to bring additional cash for
purchase of snacks and/or lunch at the store on the
island.
