Greetings,

Yesterday I spent a cold couple of hours walking my normal route through the
woods of Hances Point’s south end. My goal was to find spring migrants;
instead, I found winter birds. These included a surprising 16(!) Red-breasted
Nuthatches, 1 Brown Creeper, 4 Hooded Mergansers, and 1 Red-breasted
Merganser. The “spring” birds noted were two alternate-plumed Laughing Gulls
noisily flying over the woods and a few Pine Warblers trying to call through the
chilly morning air.

North East Town Park yielded another Laughing Gull, a few Bonaparte’s Gulls,
two eclipse-plumed Horned Grebes, and 14 Caspian Terns. Swallows here
included Tree, Barn, and Northern Rough-winged.

Later in the afternoon I had 8 Caspian Terns fishing in my cover (Hances
Point).

Good Birding,
Chris Starling
