I was at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (aka Horsehead Wetland
Center) in Grasonville for work today from 10-1:30pm. It was my first chance
to look at birds there. It was beautiful out and I saw some nice birds, plus my
first Tiger Swallowtail (butterfly) of the season. 69 bird species, plus one
intriguing duck that I needed a scope for a positive identification, but it looked
like a hen Common Eider. It was in “Prospect Bay”. At first glance (w/ 10x
bins) it looked like a hen Canvasback in profile, but it was a warm brown and
something about the bill seemed wrong for a can. Hmmm.
Noteworthy (for me!) were the big # of Ruddy Ducks (3 rafts at “Marshy
Creek” Bay), a beautiful Northern Gannet (in “Hog Bay”), and an early FOY
Redstart (a female).
