By the time I arrived at the parking lot for the Kingsley Trail at
Little Bennett this morning, it was completely full. So, I parked
up the hill at the new parking area for the Froggy Hollow Trail and
walked into the old schoolhouse from there. I saw or heard several
first-of-year birds, including a singing GRAY CATBIRD and a pair of
BROWN THRASHERS by the parking lot, both RED-EYED and
YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS along the trail, a singing SCARLET
TANAGER beyond the schoolhouse, a couple of WOOD THRUSHES
heard in the distance, and more OVENBIRDS than you could shake
a stick at. Later I ran into Anna Urciolo and Bob Hartman at the
schoolhouse and enjoyed watching one of the LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSHES with them.
After that I went over to Sugarloaf Mountain, where I added another
half dozen species to my slowly-progressing Frederick County list.
The best birds were a beautiful male BALTIMORE ORIOLE singing
by the pond at the entrance and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK soaring
overhead.
Good birding!
