I spent a pleasant couple of hours at the National Arboretum in DC
this morning. It took me forever to get there, as Beltway traffic was
terrible and there were the usual delays on NY Avenue, so I couldn't
start until about 8:20 a.m.
Mt. Hamilton and the Azalea area were pretty active, with many
Red-eyed Vireos and Wood Thrushes singing. Best warblers there were
singing TENNESSEE (FOY), NASHVILLE, BLACKPOLL (FOY), and
CHESTNUT-SIDED. Thanks to DC birder Tom Jones for pointing me in the
direction of the Tennessee.
ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS and EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE
have all returned.
The Herb Garden had a singing 1st year male ORCHARD ORIOLE and a
close YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
A male BLUE GROSBEAK was singing in the parking area for the Grove of
State Trees, and a vocal YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was heard and seen in
the tangles below the parking area for Fern Valley -- this spot is
technically on Langston golf course property.
In all I had 52 species with 12 of them warblers.
Good Birding
