After birding with binocs alone for most of my life, this past year I have been spending more time with digital camera in hand ... taking lots of photographs with my husband's Minolta Dynax 5D camera with Minolta AF Reflex 500mm F8 lens. I have been having a ball and getting some pictures that make me very happy! But quite often I am not getting the detail or clarity that I want to see with the equipment I am using, especially in low light, motion and longer distance shots.

So, I have been researching the option of getting a camera of my very own and the amount of information out there is overwhelming and sometimes a bit confusing. Therefore, I am turning to the amazing bird photographers on MDOsprey for a little help and guidance.

I realize that I need a faster lens to capture more of the detail of the birds I see. But what is the right camera and lens for someone like me who is relatively new to this (compare to all of you)? I realize that it will cost me (this will be my birthday and Christmas present for years to come! :-) but I don't need the highest end set-up. I just want to get the right equipment to truly capture the beauty I observe!

Please reply to me offline, if you have any suggestions or pointers that will help me find the right camera and lens for bird photography. Any and all help to sort this all out is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
