I birded Swan Harbor near Aberdeen in Harford County this morning and then
trucked on down to North Point to see what it was like there. I started at
Swan Harbor this morning at about 7:00 a.m.. the highlights there were the 2
Soras, 2 Virginia Rails and 1 American Bittern. After spending an hour and a
half and seeing over 60 species of birds there, I decided that the place to
be was likely Fort Howard Park. Fort Howard was the happening place this
morning. I'm sorry that I didn't get there at dawn. Even though I arrived at
9:00, the place was a beehive of activity and the birds were nearly dripping
from the trees. I've only seen it better than this on a spring day once
before and that was about 30 years ago. Today, the birds were not quite as
numerous and the diversity was not as high, but it was a remarkable day none
the less. The cacophony of sounds from the singing birds made it very
difficult to focus on any one species to identify it by song at times. By
far the most numerous species was Myrtle Warbler. Although I listed 57 of
them, it could have easily been twice that many. I tried to be conservative
on all of the counts due to my circling route through the park and the
possibility that I might count the same birds twice. Considering the amount
of activity there and the fact that nearly every tree held at least one bird
at any given time, I really think that I could have gone much higher on some
of the species. Oh well, I'd rather err on the light side..
