I led a trip today for participants in last Thursday's Warbler
identification workshop, which I gave for the Audubon Naturalist
Society. One of the objectives of the trip was to actually see a
species well, not just to hear it.
We had particularly nice views of NORTHERN PARULA, PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER and BLACK-THROATED BLUE upstream from Riley's Lock, and
terrific views of NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT at
Hughes Hollow, where there also was a nice close, singing
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO in the parking area. At Dry Seneca Creek we
had a good view of a singing PRAIRIE WARBLER. Plenty of Orioles of
both species everywhere, including multiple 1st year male Orchards in
the telescope.
I think we probably had "only" 11 warbler species, which doesn't look
like much compared with other reports from today, but our group
thoroughly enjoyed what we saw, with lifers for several in the party.
