Along with co-worker Philip Kline, who departed this area for Arizona several
years ago, checked out the Constitution Gardens and D.C. WWI Memorial
areas mid-day today.
The most surprising birds were three female RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS
swimming in the Constitution Gardens pond. At least 4 LEAST SANDPIPERS
and 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were also there.
Nearby on the ridge to the southwest, a SWAMP SPARROW was a somewhat
unusual sighting.
Warblers were around, but nothing outstanding: Yellow, Yellow-rumped,
Redstart, Blackpoll, and Black & White.
At the D.C. WWI Memorial, conditions are suboptimal right now, since much of
the east side is under several inches of water--in fact, Mallards were happily
swimming there. Swainson's Thrushes and Veeries were present on the drier
west side.
