When I saw Scott Michaud''s posting about the Wilson's warbler in
Weinberg park
only 15 minutes away in north AA County (just off Fairhaven Road left
from Ft. Smallwood Road
and down the 1st right at the yellow gate), I couldn't resist.
About a hundred yards down this two-track lane, there was a puddle
on the left-hand side.
I paused at a distance and waited to see what sort of activity might
occur if I were patient.
The male Wilson's warbler flew across with a good view, followed by
an unreliable view
of what might have been a female, but I smply couldn't get a good
enough view to even
distinguish it from a female yellowthroat. Seen by herself, I'd
never have counted her.
Around that same spot was also a redstart and a chestnut-side
warbler and, just as I was going to leave,
a small gray/olive bird at eye level with what was clearly a dark
vireo bill that merged into a dark line
through the lores and the eye. No wing bars, no dark line over the
white supercilium, and a pale
yellow wash under the wings . . . a Philadelphia vireo.
Not a bad half an hour.
Thanks, Scott.
