My last chance to bird the park this spring migration season
(off to France tomorrow!). Nice weather: cool, sunny, a bit
breezy. Lots of birders, and a good diversity of birds,
particularly at the maintenance yard. Highlights were good
looks by many birders at TENNESSEE WARBLER (yard), WILSON'S
WARBLER (equestrian field and yard), and CANADA WARBLER
(heard at field, seen at yard)---all first-of-season for me.
Other warblers observed: NASHVILLE (heard only, stables),
NORTHERN PARULA (yard), CHESTNUT-SIDED (many around),
MAGNOLIA (many around), BLACK-THROATED BLUE (a few),
YELLOW-RUMPED (a few), BLACK-THROATED GREEN (yard),
BAY-BREASTED (yard, male & female seen; I only saw the
female), BLACKPOLL (lots around), AMERICAN REDSTART (a few),
WORM-EATING (forest south of the stables, heard only),
OVENBIRD (heard only), and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (yard, dog
run). Total: 16 warbler species, plus a possible Cape May
singing (yard along the fence, probably a Blackpoll -- I
didn't get a good recording of it nor of another
unidentified 2-speed triller in the yard). I also overhead
someone saying a Yellow-throated Warbler was seen at the
yard (I couldn't confirm), and Dave may have heard a Yellow
Warbler at the yard.
Other birds of note: a pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS
frolicking (mating?), a distant YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO heard
at the yard, lots of EASTERN WOOD-PEWEES, several ACADIAN
FLYCATCHERS, a couple GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, a
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO singing in the forest near the
stables, a VEERY heard near the ridge at dawn, several
SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, and 2 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS (1 female
plus a presumed juvenile male with a yellowish-orange bib).
