Early this morning (May 17) I saw six Dunlin in breeding plumage along with
over 40 Least Sandpipers, one Semipalmated Sandpiper, two each of Solitary
and Spotted Sandpipers, a Semipalmated Plover and a Killdeer in the farm
ponds along Route 216 in Fulton in southern Howard County. Across the road
in the fields were two large flocks of Bobolinks. There were also Bobolinks in
fields behind the high school and Cliff Swallows flying over stormwater ponds
near the schools. A Savannah Sparrow was in a grassy area near the high
school. I parked in the elementary school parking lot and walked along the
north shoulder of Route 216 to view the pond. This farm pond is about a mile
west of Route 29. Caution: Route 216 carries a lot of traffic.
