Folks

I have not written too much lately. With all the spring email traffic I wanted to give it a rest, but I can't contain my excitement tonight.

For the last three days a Whip-poor-will has been singing around the house again. The bird must have been in the yard it was so loud. As many of you know this bird is a FIDS (forest interior dwelling species). There is not much forest left with all the new home construction, so this is a surprise. The Whips had been driven further away over the past few years. Perhaps this bird has found the largest remaining intact forest lot as a last attempt to survive in this historical breeding area. I don't know if it will find a mate, or if there is enough forest to feed the birds, but I will enjoy the song while it lasts.

When the Whip-poor-will is no longer in the development district, I will move. I wish there was something we could do to save this species from being extirpated from this region, but it looks hopeless with the future plans to develop in a county with a policy of no tree left standing.
