There were a number of good birds this morning (May 24) near our home in
east Columbia. All were seen in the stretch of pathway between the end of
Brush Run and Forebay Pond. First was a Lincoln’s Sparrow that showed itself
briefly around 7:30 AM. A male Mourning Warbler sang, called and finally came
out into the sunshine briefly, as did a male Wilson’s Warbler. Other warblers
seen or heard were about a dozen Blackpolls, a Yellow-rumped, a female
Canada, and a Redstart. A male Scarlet Tanager and male Indigo Bunting
provided some bright colors. A Swainson’s Thrush skulked along the forest
floor and a newly fledged Tufted Titmouse was being fed by its parents. Other
birds observed were both Red-eyed and White-eyed Vireos, Great-crested
Flycatcher, Eastern Wood Pewee, and Baltimore Oriole. There were still two
White-throated Sparrows in the area. Forebay Pond held a Great Egret, a
Least Sandpiper and two Spotted Sandpipers.
