A morning (8-10AM) walk along the North Branch stretch of the C&O Canal
yielded some delightful first of the year birds for me and some all-around
goodies. Along the road prior to the tarps, I encountered these highlights:

Northern Waterthrush -1
Blackpoll Warbler -1
American Redstart - 2
Alder Flycatcher - 1
Orchard Oriole -1 mature male

At the tarps, I ran into J.B. Churchill and after checking for shorebirds
(Least & Spotted Sandpiper and Killdeer were present), we continued along
the trail, finding some notable birds:

Green Heron - 2
Baltimore Oriole - several including a nest with female inside
Orchard Oriole - several
Warbling Vireo - MANY
Yellow-throated Vireo - 2-3
Yellow Warbler - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 1 singing male (FOY)
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 singing male
Alder Flycatcher - 1
Willow Flycatcher - 1 (FOY)
Eastern Wood Pewee - 1
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Barn Swallow
Eastern Meadowlark
Osprey - 1 harrassed by a gang of grackles

Don't miss the migration!

David
