Though migration is definitely winding down, a couple of interesting birds have appeared in Ft. Bayard Park the last few days. Today's was a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, foraging together with a female Blackpoll Warbler.
The vireo was decidely drab-looking, with neither the throat nor the spectacles being especially bright, but was clearly a Yellow-throated Vireo. None of the field guides show them as sexually dimorphic--anyone have any ideas why one might appear so drab at this time of year?
Yesterday a great-looking singing male Baltimore Oriole made an appearance--not sure if he's a migrant or is attempting to breed in the area.
My most surprising recent sighting was non-avian--a deer in my side yard this morning. While they may be all-too-frequent for many of you out there, they're not a common sighting in my part of Friendship Heights. This one looked a bit tired and confused.
