Hi All,

We had a fledgling Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the yard yesterday morning
(the third of June). It started out in a hackberry out back and it had
almost no tail, and a half-length bill and was calling constantly;
probably at most one day out of the nest. The begging call was like the
end of the adult's clatter song, but more musical (a bit like the
Black-bill's clatter song's tone). It fluttered down and spent some time
on the ground outside my office window until it half-climbed and
half-flew into the ash tree out there. An adult came by then and fed its
charge, quickly flying off without any fanfare. Eventually the little
guy worked its way around to the oak trees in the front yard, still
calling at intervals. We have learned a new fledgling call and plumage,
always something new to learn.

Good birding,
