Good Birds a-plenty

I helped David Yeany do some of his Rail Counts this morning at
Finzel Swamp. Then David and I crossed paths with Mikey Lutmerding,
George Jett and Dave Powell. They may have some other birds to report
later as David and I split from them in the early afternoon. Highlights
for me were SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL at Finzel Swamp along with the usual
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, at least 5 VEERIES, calling WILD TURKEY. There
were a few Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Chestnut-sided Warblers around.
There was also a single BLUE-HEADED VIREO and David heard an Acadian
Flycatcher. ALDER FLYCATCHERS have been abundant at Finzel this year.
At Table Rock, David and I had at least 2 singing MOURNING WARBLERS,
some more Chestnut-sideds and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 2 SLATE-COLORED
DARK-EYED JUNCOs, a singing WINTER WREN and HERMIT THRUSH. David and I
got the others in the group to meet up with us by finding an UPLAND
SANDPIPER at the Red House Road pond along Red House Road where there
was a barn with 100 (easily) Cliff Swallow nests in its eaves. I also
got George a County Close-out by tapping him on the shoulder and
pointing up where there were 2 BLACK VULTURES. I find Black Vultures
tough in Garrett County but this year I have seen them every trip I've
made to the Pleasant Valley area in the spring. David and I followed
the rest of the group the back way through Snaggy Mountain Road getting
good looks (especially important for George's Big Photo Year) at
Blackburnian Warblers and a Canada Warbler. We heard lots of BT Greens
and Blues and a Magnolia Warbler along Snaggy Mountain Road. I e-birded
all this stuff and more and am in the process of adding more photos to
my website at ...
http://photos.jbchurchill.com/ (click on the Birds Album and then the
Summer 2008 Album) I also have photos there of the Dickcissel that has
been at Antietam recently. Alternately you can look at some of the
photos on my Flickr at ...
