I spent some time at Hughes Hollow this morning in the fog, hordes of
mosquitoes, and early heat, but, despite the conditions, it was a good
morning for birds.
I walked the trail around the first small impoundment. The GREEN HERONS and
KINGFISHERS were out in force, with at least four of each in the channel
just south of the E-W levee. I found a BALTIMORE ORIOLE nest right about
the levee about half way down. The west side of the impoundment hosted the
best birds - CEDAR WAXWINGS, a singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, numerous INDIGO
BUNTINGS, a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO that was chased
into the open by an ORCHARD ORIOLE affording good looks, and a female WOOD
DUCK with two young.
When I returned to my car, there were two YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS only about
12 feet up in a tree right above the parking lot.
