Since all of my previous birding trips to St. Mary's County have
been to Point Lookout in the middle of winter, I decided that it
was way past time that I went down to look for breeding birds. So,
starting at the northern end of the county about 7:00, I spent about
90 minutes doing some roadside birding on the side roads off of
Route 5. Eventually I ended up at Greenwell State Park, on the
Patuxent River west of Hollywood. Although this park consists
mainly of agricultural fields and scrub habitat, with a very modest
amount of hardwood forest, I saw a nice diversity of birds
nonetheless. My more-or-less complete list for the park follows.
