Sorry for the late report but my job kept me away from the computer. Living
just a few minutes from Chincoteague NWR, I decided to drive down 2 weekends
ago to see the black billed egret and the Wilson's Phalarope.
At 3 PM I drove around the Snow Goose pond and found the bird 5 minutes
from entering the drive.
The egret wondered around 125 feet away then flew closer to 25 feet onto the
bank. I took good pictures with my Kodak Easy Share 10 x zoom. While doing
so I noticed the thick black bill with some yellow colorations on the lower
bill. The lore was a olive green. It was a good sized egret with black legs
and feet.
It also had light tan short plumes on its back. I also saw 1 Wilson's
Phalarope on the other side of the pond.
Now to update my birding report in MD.
Today was not an ordinary day at work. At around 2 PM
while working at the Assateague SP Nature Center a young girl came in. She
told me that there was a strange duck on the beach that wouldn't move or fly
away. A Volunteer and I walked about a mile down the beach in search of the
bird. It was around 3 PM that we found the bird witch happened to be a first
summer Common Loon. We got a towel to wrap around he loons head and body
and put it in a box.
I then called the Tri State Bird Rescue in Newark DE witch was able to send
one of there volunteers to take the loon to the bird rescue. While I was
driving to meet the volunteer the loon started to cry ( your typical loon call )
which filled the hole car drowning out the radio sound. It stopped crying
when started talking to it. This is a day I'll never forget.
