You can tell the birding has slowed down when we start chatting on here
about mushrooms. Must be even the Henslow's in Mont Co. has shut up.
Ok, so here's a game we can play until the next wave of interesting birds
shows up.
I was out the other day in about 90 degree heat between 2 & 3 PM. You know -
when we assume most birds have taken a siesta, maybe for the rest of the
summer. See if you can top my list.
Here's what was still singing along the NC bike trail:
Mourning Dove
Am. Crow
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren
House Wren
Red-eye
White-eye
Great Crested FC
Acadian FC
E Kingbird
Am Robin
E Bluebird
Veery
Wood Thrush
Catbird
N Parula
Ovenbird
Scarlet Tan
Blue-Gray Gnat (if you can call their squeak a song)
E Towhee
N Cardinal
Song Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
Am Goldfinch
Indigo Bunting
Must admit the list is short on warblers and orioles. But remember this was
in mid-afternoon. Obviously an early morning list might be better. 27
species when our expectations are probably close to nill on a July
afternoon.
Everybody grab a bottle of water and go birding in the hot afternoon and see
how you do.
