I ventured to Bombay Hook this morning to check for the Little Egret and the
Cliff Swallows nesting under the bridge just North of Taylor's Gut. The
Cliff Swallows were abundant but the Little Egret was among the missing.
The bird sighting sheet had no listings for the Little Egret for the past
several days. Of course, there were probably 100 Snowy Egrets and several
million biting flies so a thorough search was just not possible.
Avocets and Black Necked Stilts were there, along with many Short Billed
Dowitchers, several Yellowlegs and a one second glimpse of a possible
Pectoral Sandpiper before it disappeared in the weeds.
Back in my Maryland back yard, the nesting birds and newly fledged birds are
putting on a nice show. I have a male and female Hummer coming to the
feeder. I hope to see more if they had a successful hatching.
A Crow robbing a Robin's nest attracted quite a crowd of Grackles, Robins,
Catbirds, Orioles, Downies and even a Great Crested Flycatcher. The crow
ignored them until it was ready to fly away.
