Sally,
The chimney where the swifts roost is located at the East Silver Spring
Elementary School at 631 Silver Spring Ave. (inside the Beltway and
about 3 blocks east of Georgia Ave. and 2 blocks west of Piney Branch
Road). The chimney is best viewed from the teachers' parking lot or the
play ground. During the day time you can usually see 6 to 12 swifts
flying above the trees. They stay pretty close to the school.
Yesterday, I counted 5 swifts exit the chimney but this morning they
must have exited earlier than 6 :15 AM. By September the number should
grow to 20 or more sleeping over in the chimney.
There is a major construction project planned for that school in 2009.
I do not know if the chimney will be retained or removed.
