We had a great day. While we did not find any real rarities, numbers
of birds were good and views were excellent. Highlights included good
numbers of CORY'S SHEARWATERS, several AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, highly
cooperative GREATER SHEARWATERS, great looks at RED-NECKED PHALAROPES
and an adult BRIDLED TERN. COMMON DOLPHINS put on a great show,
playing with and around the boat. Other interesting things included a
half dozen LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES, a number of PORTUGUESE MAN-O-WAR,
and an OCEAN SUNFISH right next to the boat.
As we approached land we thought we were finished, but instead we were
treated to a smashing show put on by 4 PARASITIC JAEGERS, first
harassing 2 ROYAL TERNS and later 4 NORTHERN GANNETS.
We still have a few spaces available on our overnight trip leaving
this coming Thursday night and heading well offshore into deep waters.
The following are our final tallies. Note that because we were on the
state line for a while, we counted multiple birds in both Delaware and
Maryland. As a result, the numbers don't necessarily sum across.
