Jane Kostenko and I arrived at Eagle Harbor at 3 pm today, 8/22. There were an number of gulls loafing on the various piers. There were a few Laughing Gulls preening out in the water. Suddenly, from somewhere out on the river, the Black-headed Gull flew in and landed and began preening as well. After a while, it flew up and attempted to land on the pier behind the house immediately to the right of the beach access. The hybrid gull was perched on the outermost piling and at one point they were vying for the same piling. It was an interesting interaction which Jane got a few pix of. Then the BHGU displaced the LAGU on the piling next to the hybrid and stayed there for the duration of our stay. It was interesting to note the size difference between the BHGU and the hybrid, the hybrid being larger and the BHGU smaller than the adjacent LAGU. The lighting was also much better highlighting the bright red legs and bill of the BHGU. The dark underside of the
primaries was obvious as was the pale upper wing. The hybrid wasn't as cooperative and tucked its head in most of the time we were there except when being harassed by the BHGU.
