This morning Mikey Lutmerding, J.B. Churchill, my wife Colleen, and I
descended upon Finzel Swamp to catch part of the recent wave of migrants.
Mikey was already there listening to flight calls when we arrived at 6:20
and J.B. joined us about 6:40. We all birded together until about 8:00AM.
Colleen and I stayed until about 9:15, and thankfully we did. Earlier in the
morning we tallied 9 warbler species including a single WILSON'S WARBLER,
first spotted by Mikey. Also included were several CAPE MAY WARBLERS and one
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. However, the best bird of the day came just at the
second bridge about 8:40. I had noticed an Empidonax perched on one of the
snags. It turned out to be a LEAST FLYCATCHER. I started pishing and then
out of the speckled alder next to the trail popped another Empid. with a
yellowish bold eyering with noticeable yellow coloration throughout the
throat and into what part of the breast I could see. A combination of those
characters together with its overall shape convinced me that we were looking
at a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. Finally! After I played a recording, it
hopped out for another brief viewing and then it was gone. Apparently the
Yellow-bellied recording was enough to stir up the Leasts because soon
after, I heard several che-bekking all around us. What a great day! Finally
a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher! A complete list of what Colleen and I saw
