Here's an update on the storm for those that are trying to figure out where
to bird on Saturday. The storm track has shifted quite a bit east from the
original track that put it over central MD at mid-day on Saturday. The storm
is currently forecasted to make landfall near Myrtle Beach and then head
northeast from there. At this time, the storm is expected to head across the
extreme eastern NC mainland before reemerging over open water just below
Norfolk, VA. The storm center will parallel the coast as the center then
passes just east of Ocean City. This track should not be very favorable for
many birds to show up inland, although there might be a few reports of terns
here and there.
On the other hand, eyes should next be on Ike as this storm is starting to
look like it might also be an impact to the east coast towards the end of
next week. This storm is forecasted to turn northwestward, reaching the
Bahama Islands by Tuesday. Once again, the track will likely get some
modification, but this is a serious storm. It's currently a category 4
hurricane with max winds of 145 MPH.
