9/2/08 I decided to bird around the Pocomoke City area.
Starting at Unionville Rd and River View Rd heading towards the Sand Pits I
saw the following birds,
15 Blue Grosbeaks
27 Bobolinks
2 Pileated Woodpeckers
2 Downey Woodpeckers
2 Common Yellowthroats
7 Indigo Buntings
30+ Bluebirds
1 Field Sparrow
5 Song Sparrows
40+ Chipping Sparrows
15 Carolina Chickadees
2 Tufted Titmice
3 Carolina Wrens
9 Morning Doves
12 Goldfinches
1 Wood duck
4 Red tailed Hawks
2 Coopers Hawks
1 Kestrel
1 Chestnut sided Warbler
3 Pine Warblers
47 Black Vultures
36 Turkey Vultures
Turning Right on Sand Pit Rd. I saw a tree filled with Starlings and almost
decided to keep on driving but scanned the tree just in case there was
something else besides the Starlings. Right in front of me was a smaller yellowish
brown bird that was pumping its tail up and down. I looked closer and saw
that it was my first Northern Waterthrush. Wow! To think I was going to miss
out on a life bird because of some Starlings.
other birds I saw besides N. Waterthrush.
50+ Starlings
9 Mockingbirds
2 Brown Thrashers
3 Ruby throated Hummingbirds
1 Yellow billed Cuckoo
At Sand Pits:
8 Bald Eagles
100+ Canada Geese
14 Black Ducks
4 Wood Ducks
2 Wild Turkeys
3 Male Bobolinks ( still in breeding plumage)
Moving South towards VA I stopped to bird right on the boarder on Holland
Rd. There I was greeted by the following birds.
10 Red eyed Vireos
6 White eyed Vireos
5 Philadelphia Vireos
1 Black and White Warbler
2 Northern Parula
17 American Redstart
4 Louisiana Waterthrush
2 Worm -eating Warblers
5 Pileated Woodpeckers
17 Wood Ducks
Before heading home I noticed a warbler with pink feet and beak. I also
noticed that it had complete white eye ring. It ran on the ground and up a vine
to eye level. I look in my Sibley bird book and noticed that it was a 1st
winter Connecticut Warbler, A rare find for this area and lifer number 2 for
the day.
Back home I added a new back yard bird with 30+ Bobolinks.
