All indicators pointed to a good flight last night and since I need some
practice identifying fall warblers before next Sunday's Fall Count, I
found myself at sunrise visiting my favorite migrant spot near
Greenbelt.

Warblers were scarce but the mid-sized gaudies made up for it -- ELEVEN
Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, 8 Baltimore Orioles, 4 Scarlet Tanagers, 30
Waxwings. Most of those were in my favorite tree. Also present were 8
Swainson's Thrushes, 3 Veeries, and 2 Wood Thrushes. I even found a few
warblers -- Parula (5), Nashville, Black and white (2), Black-throated
Green (2), Redstart, Magnolia (2), Chestnut-sided (2), Pine. After two
hours, I decided to pad my list with a quick stop at Lake Artemesia
where the only warbler was a yellowthroat and the only migrant was
another Oriole. In all, a nice morning -- 4 hours, 50 species, very
little driving.

The annual statewide Fall Bird Count is this coming weekend. The Prince
George's County portion will be on Sunday, September 21. If you want to
participate, let me know. If you are unsure about participating but are
willing to succumb to my arm-twisting, let me know. If you don't plan
to participate but you pass through the county next Sunday, let me know
where you were and what you saw and I'll figure out how to incorporate
that data.
