Fort Smallwood Bird Walk: 9/21/08

Hello all.

The Fort Smallwood Park Bird Club had its monthly walk yesterday and found a few seasonal favorites. 

Highlights were 2 Magnolia Warblers, 1 Yellow Warbler and a very cooperative adult Bald Eagle perched on a snag over the pond until it was chased off by an immature of the same species. 

The Maryland Native Plant Society also had a nature walk yesterday, led by Hal Wirenga.  The found Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Baltimore Oriole and Sharp-shinned Hawk among others. 

Between Hal's walk and mine we also had a total of 34 Monarch butterflies. Hal also added 9 Painted Lady, 21 Sachem and several other species.

It was a good day.

Double-crested Cormorant: 5
Laughing Gull: 5
Ring-billed Gull: 4
Herring Gull: 10
Great Black-backed Gull: 1
Caspian Tern: 11
Bald Eagle: 2  one adult and one immature flyby
Osprey: 1
Killdeer: 2  Always a bird walk favorite
Belted Kingfisher: 1
Hairy Woodpecker: 1
Carolina Chickadee: 10+
White-breasted Nuthatch: 1
Eastern Bluebird: 2
Gray Catbird: 3
Eastern Phoebe: 1
Empid. sp.: 1
Red-eyed Vireo: 2
Yellow Warbler: 1
Palm Warbler: 1 very fast look at it, yellow
Magnolia Warbler: 2
American Redstart: 1 female/immature
