Hello, birders.
My friend Connie and I spent Sat. night and all day Sunday at the park. On Saturday night we heard a few migrants overhead. The birding was slow on Sunday but we still had fun as the weather was great and the butterflying was wonderful. We got 51 bird species. The highlights were:
COMMON LOON, 1 in the Bay just N of the lighthouse. Probably the same bird reported on this listserv by Mr. Haas the other day.
migrant raptors
OSPREY, 1
SH.-SHINNED HAWK, 5
only 2 shorebird sp.:
GR. YELLOWLEGS, 1 heard
SANDERLING, one flock of 6 moving N along the boulders N of the lighthouse
BONAPARTE'S GULL, 2
BLACK TERN, 1 feeding w/ Forster's Terns and gulls over the river
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, heard 1 in campground loop C and heard 1 in loop B
6 warbler sp., one of which was 1 late YELLOW WARBLER just N of the lighthouse. Most warblers were YELLOW-RUMPED.
The best birding was in the southern part of the picnic area, as that's there most of the migrants were located. We could not buy a sparrow. No ducks or vireos, either.
The butterflying was excellent. One particular flowering bush in the middle of the loop at the point had over 20 Monarchs and Buckeyes nectaring on it at once. Many butterflies in the picnic area were avidly feeding on ripe persimmons on the ground.
