After a brief birding stop in Rock Creek Park this (Monday, 10/13)
morning (see Wallace's post), I went to Kenilworth Park and met up with
Gary Allport and Greg Butcher. We slogged through the high, wet grass
from one end to the other, and were treated to incredibly close views of
2 SEDGE WRENS! They were extremely confiding and though they stayed low
in the brush, we were able to get excellent looks at them. One was
tailless, whether that's due to molt or evading a raptor, I'm not sure.
Other birds of note were:
1 EASTERN MEADOWLARK
8+/- GREEN-WINGED TEAL (at the Aquatic Gardens)
2 AMERICAN KESTRELS
3-4 COOPER'S HAWKS
1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
1-2 RED-TAILED HAWK
lots (25-30?) of PALM WARBLERS (both Western & Yellow)
fair number (20?) SAVANNAH SPARROWS
Good birding,
