I spent this afternoon doing a little birding (and a lot of walking)
in northern Carroll County. My best sighting by far was a small
flock (8-10 birds) of PINE SISKINS on Study Road, about 100 yards
south of the intersection with Halter Road. They were resting, preening,
and calling in the top of a Black Locust at the end of a row of spruce
and hemlock growing alongside the road. Other noteworthy birds
included a pair of CACKLING GEESE with the Canadas on Study Road
pond, two SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS mixing it up high in the air over
the pond, and a BELTED KINGFISHER fishing from the end of the dock.
A great day to be out!
