I learned that even difficult calls can be made (Loggerheaad vs.
Northern
Shrike has always bedeviled me) with a little help from
1.) a friend who's a good birder (thanks to Stan Arnold who showed up
and picked up on the bird's flight pattern when we thought he'd
disappeared)
2.) trying to make a sketch -- nothing else focuses your mind on the
details
like "scanning" the Polaroid in your mind's eye to guide your hand
and pencil
and
3.) chance, i.e. encountering Doug Gill from Chino Farms whose
enthusiasm
and savvy experience added background that was most helpful when he
pointed
out that there'd been a juvenile N Shrike there last year making
this possibly a
recurring individual bird.
Thanks, also, to Maren Gimpel and Dan Small for posting this bird for
the rest of us to enjoy. We appreciate.
